Alumni In Action: Jason Bentley

7/17/2014

Jason Bentley is a GIVE alumnus that was inspired to action by his recent volunteer efforts. While working on the construction of a school being built in the coastal village of Jiquilillo, open-ended conversations are quite common. The GIVE guides will often times open discussion up to volunteers and encourage them to think about the environment and culture that the volunteers are immersed in.

Jason learned of the growing global concern revolving smoke inhalation and this sparked him to search for answers.

Upon his arrival home, Jason began investigation into this widespread issue and discovered the adverse health effects that stem from smoke inhalation. He found that the primary source causing these issues are the fumes and smoke of solid fuels that are used for open fire cooking in the developing world.

After months of research, Jason’s interest in the smoke inhalation epidemic culminated in him writing his senior thesis.

“The Impacts of Smoke Inhalation in the Developing World” brings the information surrounding smoke inhalation full circle by delving into not only the causes and effects, but also the current status and endeavors being pursued to alleviate this epidemic. From utilizing ventilation, to burning eco friendly materials, Jason presents viable solutions and alternatives to combat this issue in developing nations.

At the end of June, Jason will be returning to Nicaragua for a month to again immerse himself in the Central American culture. We are excited to see where his upcoming trip will lead him to next!

Inspiration often times sprouts from some of the most unexpected experiences, and that is exactly where Jason found his.

Jason’s senior thesis is available via the following link. We invite you to read it!
