The Flying Samaritan
Melissa Andrew, a 2013 past volunteer, was kind enough to update us about her recent volunteer endeavors since returning from Nicaragua last summer. Here is what she is up to now:
“I am proud to say that I’ve been an active member of Flying Samaritans at UCSD for a year now. This international non-profit organization has not only given me the opportunity to collaborate with such amazing students and doctors, but I have also seen hard dedication from each member toward building this small organization into something huge.
Flying Samaritans provides underserved populations in Mexico with free health services via clinics and hospitals in various communities. The UCSD organization runs a general medicine clinic in Ensenada where we are given the chance to have hands-on patient care experience and the opportunity to shadow doctors.
We drive to Ensenada once a month, and throughout the year hold fundraisers and events to buy medical supplies. It is such a rewarding and fun experience to know that we are able to dedicate our time to see an average of 30 patients!”
